The event covered presentations of initial findings from FACTAGE as well as presentations from external academics and researchers. It was grouped into four sessions:
- Session I: Fundamental Inequalities: Health and Mortality
- Session II: Late for Work? Older Workers on the Labour Market
- Session III: Skills at Work
- Session IV: Retiring when?
Statistics Austria presented the first results of a feasibility study. We assessed the technical challenges of using the EU-SILC user database for measuring differential mortality. While we are certain the data can be used for comparative mortality studies, there are some aspects that are limiting the power of the analyses. First, not all EU countries are included in the database (e.g. Germany). Second, individuals above the age of 80 are grouped into an “80+” category in the data, making detailed comparisons at the top end of the age spectrum impossible. Third, mortality data by month would allow for more accurate analysis than the currently available quarterly data (right now only quarter year information is possible). Finally, validity of analyses could be increases by linking EU-SILC data to national mortality registers.
