According to Eurostat figures, 32 per cent of Europe’s over-65s live alone, most of whom are women. Loneliness has become a public health issue, to which the Red Cross refers to as a “silent epidemic”, as "harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day" and "that kills more people than obesity", reports an independent news website.
